The Prigione Fountain is via Goffredo Mameli, on the Gianicolo's slopes was realized on the project of the Architect Domenico Fontana, between 1587-1590 as prospective background of one of the avenues of the large garden of the Montalto Peretti's Mansion. The mansion is the imposing abode on the Esquilino of the Pope Sisto V. The fountain is the only evidence of the abode destroyed at the end of the XIX century. The fountain was acquired, dismantled and housed by the Municipality, first in Via Venezia and then in the Gardens of Via del Quirinale, where it was supposed to be rebuilt. After a couple of years (1894-95), taking into account the unstable preservation conditions of the dismembered pieces, the fountain was reformed and used as monumental background of Via Genova, where it laid up to 1923. Later on, the fountain was moved to the current place on demand of the Ministry of the Interior, whose intention was to create the new entrance for the new telephone exchanges.
Moving the fountain provoked a deep change of the building materials. Since 1924 the fountain did not undergo consistent maintenance interventions. That is why its preservation conditions lapsed. The deterioration of the surfaces (without considering the several lacking parts) was in general the typical of the open-air works, the darkening of the travertine with evident black splits, biologic layers and growing over vegetation; thick calcareous sedimentations; saline blooming on the surface of the niche and of the vault.After performing the analysis necessary for characterising of the building materials and of the kind of alterations the works of restoration and consolidation were launched:

  1. Cleaning of the headstones surfaces and of the plastering of the thick layer of dirt and of the calcareous sedimentations;
  2. Biocide treatment and elimination of the growing over vegetation;
  3. Strengthening of the broken down surfaces;
  4. Control of the stopping and remaking of the deteriorated areas;
  5. Treatment of the metallic parts;
  6. Aesthetic control of all the surfaces;
  7. Application of a protective waterproofing coating;
  8. Waterproofing of the tank.

Moreover, in order to best value the monument, the protection area was enlarged and improved by carrying out a new pavement of sanpietrinos, placing bench and implementing a proper lighting system.
